Giant Echium (Echium pininana) - Fairbank Hotel, Crantock

There is something totally surreal about these marvellous plants that are Giant Echiums (Echium pininana) but, to some, better known as 'Marge Simpsons'! They are fabulous and they survive the extremes of weather that the north Cornwall coast line throws at them. In their own way though they are an absolute delight; an alien tower of lilac flowers waving in the breeze and, this year, we have in excess of 25 currently flowering in the garden, like large triffids, creating a spectacular effect alongside the Cornish Palms and various leaf ferns! This picture, taken from the conservatory decking looking out over Crantock beach towards Goose Rock in the bay, shows how wonderful they look and, as they are self-seeding, we can look forward to another fine display year on year! With the late Spring flowers in abundance and the poppies to look forward to now really is the time to come on down to the Fairbank Hotel, Crantock the place to - sit back...relax...enjoy the view!

With Spring rapidly approaching and thoughts of refreshing coastal walks, whilst enjoying abundant wild flowers across the headlands, accompanied by the delightful songs of the soaring birds, it is time to update our readers on the latest changes that have taken place here since we completed the major exterior work last November.

New, for February 2007, along with a number of changes to some of our rooms, we have totally transformed the front entrance lobby which is now furnished with new and, very comfortable, seating, perfect for enjoying that extra morning cup of coffee in peace with the morning papers while waiting for the rest of the family to be organised!

We hope you like the look and feel of our newly updated web site. We are very excited as this now provides many additional features and information to those wishing to view them and we are extremely grateful to our friends at Quintdown Web for all the assistance they have given during the development of this site. Now the site is launched, high on the agenda will be our long promised webcam, ready to deliver the spectacular view over Crantock Bay from our raised decking to remind you of what you are missing - so please watch this space for further news!
